L. S. Skaggs Patient Wellness Center

The L. S. Skaggs Patient Wellness Center Opened on July 11, 2016, Taking an Interprofessional Approach to Serving Patients With Chronic Disease and Disability

Interprofessional care is better care, and that matters to people in our community who suffer from chronic health conditions. The University of Utah's Colleges of Health, Pharmacy, Nursing and School of Dentistry have developed a comprehensive wellness center with interprofessional services for the chronically ill and disabled. The L. S. Skaggs Patient Well ness Center will capitalize on student energy and faculty expertise from four colleges. It will offer a one-stop approach for information and services that enable patients to manage chronic conditions and enjoy a higher quality of life.

The Center occupies a 4,000-square foot space in the Oral Health Sciences Building in Research Park. It houses a large exercise space, the Jack Lunt Learning Annex, and three private consultation rooms. This ideal location provides door-to-door public transportation access and is a perfect partner with the School of Dentistry's new outpatient clinic, which provides dental and oral health services to under served populations. As the majority of patients served by this center will come from under served groups, the natural synergy between the wellness center and dental clinic enhances the ease of providing needed services to wellness clients.

Wellness Center patients will experience affordable access to group exercise classes and educational seminars. Additionally, faculty/student teams will provide specialized wellness services on a personalized level.

For example:

Pharmacy students will offer medication review and education

• Physical therapy students will teach strategies for pain reduction during exercise

• Nutrition students will counsel with clients struggling with weight management

• Nursing students will assess clients' mental health needs and lead stress management classes

The University of Utah thanks the Skaggs Foundation for Research and the JAX Foundation. Their generous support has enabled the creation of this innovative, interdisciplinary care center. This new multi-college collaboration will provide essential care services and open new avenues for research to advance interprofessional care practice.
